Is this you in that picture? Are you feeling the struggles that many of us naturalists are currently going through at some point in our lives? The good hair days and the bad hair days, the problems that we have endured but managed to think outside the box to come up with a solution to your bad hair days.

Well, the plus side of these things is that you are not alone on this hair journey.  Who can put their hands up, and honestly say that they have perfect hair? Or good hair? What is considered good hair? I know that I have experienced a few of these hair problems, that I am about to highlight to you all in a moment, but there are solutions to these problems, focus on the positive more, rather than the negative, remember people will always have their own interpretation of what they think about your hair or the society we live in will dictate to you, what is considered "Good Hair", when in reality who gives two tripping's what society has  to say about your hair? What do they know about good hair?

Western Society considered natural curly hair as unkempt and messy, in order for us to fit into Western Society, and to allow us to get the best possible opportunities in life, we were expected to straighten our hair.

Slaves are recorded as being proud of their natural hair back then, wearing  their natural hair in a multitude of different hairstyles that was inspired  by their African ancestors.  So why are most of us ashamed of what we have? In modern society, there was a lot of processes that black women put their hair through in an attempt to make their hair appear straighter, in order to conform to the ideals of society. Processes that burnt our scalp to shreds, straight to hot combing and oil pressing because of what Society says about our hair or what is considered appropriate!

Hair Problems

Tangles: This problem may occur for must of us, especially if our natural hair is worn out and exposed to the elements, and even when our hair is shrunken or not properly moisturized.  Ways to avoid tangles is to make sure our hair is well moisturized, and detangled properly by using your fingers, a comb or a tangle teaser.  A good way to avoid tangles is to wear your hair in a protective style.  If you opt to have your hair worn out, stretched styles like twist outs or braid outs, is the better methods in helping to minimize knots and tangles.

Shedding: Our hair will shed between 50 to 100 hairs a day which is considered normal, the shedding will become a problem when the body sheds a significant amount of hair every day, this is considered excessive hair shedding which in effect could be a medical problem that needs to be addressed. See the previous article on distinguishing the difference between Shedding and Breakage on this link below.

Dry Hair: This problem will occur when the hair is not receiving enough moisture, you will lose shine to your hair which in turn, makes your hair look frizzy, lifeless and dull looking.  Shine and luster are good signs of healthy hair.  What contributes to having dry hair, forms in various factors, such as the environment, are you living in a hot or dry climate? Are you constantly exposing your hair to the direct sun?Are you frequently swimming in chlorinated water?Did you know that your physical health can have an impact on you having dry hair!
These are just a small insight to having dry hair, but what you can do to overcome this problem is to ensure, that your hair is covered and not exposed to the sun and dry climates.  Always ensure that your hair is protected when going swimming, wear a swimming hat, avoid shampooing your hair daily, it is best to use a protein enriched conditioner, to help repair hair, blow dry your hair less and try to allow your hair to air dry naturally.

Shrinkage: Hair shrinkage is always going to remain with us so why are we fighting against it, we should seek ways of how to work with it! Shrinkage equals healthy hair, the fact that your hair can return to its natural state when being stretched, is an indication of health and strength in your strands, this is far more important, having nice healthy and strong hair!  There are several curl stretching techniques you can use, to help achieve that stretched look, if shrinkage is not something you want to roll with, and they are:

> Braid Outs
> Twist Outs
> Bantu Knot Outs
> Roller Sets
> Curl Formers
> Bunning

Wash Days: Yes most of us hate wash days and that long dreaded, time-consuming process of washing your hair, but all that hard work pays off in the end, I like my wash days and the fact that my hair is soaking up all that nutriment, that my hair longs for, when being exposed to the elements on a daily basis.  When my hair was permed, I hated the fact that I would turn up to the hairdressers bright and early, and be coming out of the hairdressers late, why? Because the process was extra long, so the fact that I can do my hair at my home and at leisure is a big plus! It may take long, but at least when I am hungry or thirsty, I can get up into my kitchen to make a meal and drink.
