Hey, my lovelies!

I hope you are well, I wanted to talk with you all about dairy and whether this can cause skin problems such as acne, breakouts etc.  I must say If you asked me to drink a glass of milk, that for sure is something that's just not happening, however, I can easily have milk in my cereals, bizarre right, but I really couldn't tell you why that is the case and I am guessing I am not alone on this one, what I do know is that milk is something I have occasionally and not often.  Diary, as we all know, has nutritional benefits that our body needs well at least that has been drummed into us from a young age and still a story being told up to this day. Calcium, potassium, protein and vitamin D are the nutrients that our body needs and we get this from eating dairy products, but do we?

I remember having this discussion with my mum who cannot have milk at all or any food products that contains milk in it, instead, she opts to have almond milk due to the effects that milk has on her health.  It does often pose a question as to whether cows milk, in general, is good for us, after all, cows develop milk to feed their babies, so how then does milk become a good source for us? Let the investigation begin!!

What do the experts say?

So the health industry says that diary is an essential food we need for our bone health, however, the experts disagree and think that diary is harmful and should be avoided, shocking right, do you feel that you have been misled into thinking that dairy products were actually good for our health!

The one common argument we have against dairy products is the fact that it is not natural for us to consume, of course, this sheds more light on this matter, as I had mentioned before the purpose of cows milk is to feed a growing calf, we are not calves and being an adult we do not need help in growing.  So why do we still consume milk?

Milk is known to cause acne and breakouts because there is a hormone called IGF-1 that is found in milk and this hormone is great for baby cows because it helps them to grow big and strong, but for us it makes our acne grow big instead.

Diary causes our skin to produce excess sebum and excess oil clog our pores and produces more acne, this becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and leads to inflammation.  It is proven that the more milk you consume you will develop certain skin issues, such as acne, breakouts, inflammation and ageing.

A panel of scientists stated that milk doesn't benefit sports performance, there is no evidence that dairy is good for your bones or prevents osteoporosis, in fact, the animal protein it contains may help to cause bone loss. Diary is linked to prostate cancer and it is full of saturate fat that is linked to heart disease, dairy causes digestive problems for 75% of people with lactose intolerance and it can aggravate irritable bowel.

You see our bodies just weren't made to digest milk on a regular basis, instead, most scientists agree that it is better to get calcium, potassium, protein and fats from other food sources, like whole plant foods, vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds and seaweed.

So what can you consume if the diary is not an option?

There are so many other options to milk that you can consume like unsweetened organic almond milk, rice milk and unsweetened organic coconut milk and organic full fat coconut milk, do be careful with milk substitutes as they tend to have a bunch of added sugar and sometimes vegetable oil that can worsen acne.

You can get your calcium from foods such as dark green leafy vegetables, sesame tahini, sea vegetables and sardines or salmon with the bones in them.

Soy milk is not good for you because it is made from soybeans that have estrogen mimicking effects on your body.  It contains large amounts of omega-6 fats which cause inflammation and redness of acne unless balanced out by healthy amounts of omega- 3 fats.  Soy is linked to increased rate of birth defects and increased chances of Alzheimer's later in life.

Try giving up all dairy if possible, try this for the two weeks, you will have to eliminate milk, cheese, yoghurt and ice cream for two weeks just to see if you feel better or an improvement in your health,  I will be doing this challenge to see if there are any improvements and if possible will see if I can eventually eliminate it completely.  They say you should see improvements with your sinuses, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, energy and weight lets see!

If you can tolerate dairy, try using raw organic dairy products instead and seek fermented products like unsweetened yoghurts and kefir occasionally.

I hope this has enlightened you as it has me, let me know your thoughts on this topic have you removed dairy completely from your diet? What improvements have you noticed from doing that?
