Why are you experiencing hair loss?

So during your pregnancy stage, you would have experienced lovely thick long hair throughout your that stage, but the baby is here now and you're over whelmed by how much hair is falling out of your head.  Please do not be alarmed by it, I know that human nature kicks in and we start to have a panic attack and think that the world is coming to an end, which is perfectly normal, after all, we are all humans.  Let me just ease your mind a bit by telling you that this is a temporary phase.  I have an article linked here to explain, What the hair growth cycle teaches us about hair growth.

In the normal cycle of hair growth, you will notice that some hair in this phase will shed every day but that is perfectly normal in that phase, but while you are pregnant what happens is the estrogen freezes your hair growth called the " Resting" phase of the cycle so the hair that would normally shed remains there and in turn you would start to notice thicker hair growth during your pregnancy. So once you have your baby the estrogen level declines and all that hair that remained in the "Resting" phase will start to fall out, but remember this is only temporary.

Many will experience hair fall all over their head or it may come out when you brush your hair in large clumps or when you shower which for many will see a lot more during this process. Please don't worry as you are not alone in this process there are so many that are experiencing this problem, but I have collated some useful information to help you through this.

Advice Corner

1. Seek help from a hair stylist that can better advise you on what they can do to help with this problem, perhaps they could provide a style that works for your hair a new hair cut.

2. I would suggest seeking products that help to volumise your hair and there are several natural hair products out there that will offer that for you.  Look for volumising shampoo and conditioners and or mousse that will provide your hair with body.

3. Be gentle especially when washing your hair, try to shampoo your hair once a week or month or twice a week it's up to you, but do use lukewarm water to wash your hair.

4. Don't brush your hair wet use a wide tooth comb or use your fingers to detangle your hair and leave your hair out to dry naturally. The less manipulation is done in your hair the better.

5. Avoid pigtails, braids or any tight hairstyles that will create excessive pulling wear a style that is loose and will create less manipulation and tension to your scalp.

6. Try to have stress free days, do something to ease your mind, body and soul, believe me, your body and hair will thank you for this. Do make sure you get a good nights sleep too.

7. Eat healthily and make sure you drink plenty of water,  eat a diet rich in protein and vital vitamins and minerals. Opt for foods high in vitamins A, B, C and E as well as iron, zinc, copper, magnesium and selenium. In fact, if you are low on iron, zinc or any other essential nutrients, your hair will suffer a lot.

Including a variety of fruits, vegetables and healthy proteins in your diet is the best way to ensure healthy hair. Foods that improve hair health include dark leafy greens (for the iron and vitamin C), eggs (for the vitamin D), sweet potatoes and carrots (for the beta-carotene), and fish (for omega-3s and magnesium).
8. Biotin is a B-complex vitamin that aids faster hair growth. This vitamin helps reduce hair loss because it helps in the synthesis of hair proteins, such as keratin. In fact, lack of biotin has been associated with hair breakage and hair loss.

9. Oil scalp massages this is very beneficial for your hair, try to incorporate regular scalp massages with oil that will help increase blood circulation to the scalp and it will strengthen the hair roots, do this for at least 5 to 10 minutes using your finger tips. Leave the oil in over night as a pre poo treatment, then wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo the next day.
